Liverpool forward, Darwin Nunez was involved in a fight with spectators at the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina after Colombia knocked out his country, Uruguay from the 2024 Copa America.

Darwin Nunez started the 2024 Copa America Semi-final game which took place earlier today, July 10, and recorded four attempts on goal, none of which he converted.

At the end of the game, Colombia who played the entire second half with a man down, won the match courtesy of a first-half goal scored by Jefferson Lerma in the 39th minute.

Towards the end of the disappointing 1-0 defeat to the 10-man Colombian side, some supporters suspected to be from the winning team reportedly threw objects towards the side of the stadium where the families and close associates of the Uruguayan footballers were.

That reportedly continued until the game ended without police intervention according to Uruguay captain José María Giménez whose family members were also victims of the attack.

In an attempt to protect their families, Darwin Nunez and other Uruguayan footballers including Ronald Araújo, Santiago Giménez, and Federico Valverde, reportedly ran to the side of the stadium.

In a viral video, the Liverpool star was seen exchanging punches with a group of spectators wearing Colombia’s colours as security operatives tried to hold him back.

After security operatives were able to take control of the situation,
Darwin Nunez was seen hugging his son on the pitch according to a report by the BBC.

At the time of writing, the 25-year-old striker has not made an official reaction to the incident, but Uruguay captain was quoted by Reuters describing it as a “disaster”.

He added: “There was no police and we had to defend our families. This is the fault of two or three people who had a few too many drinks and don’t know how to drink.”
