2024 Olympics: Adekuroye Qualifies For Quarter-finals, Nigeria’s 4×100m Teams Out

1 month ago 2

Nigerian athlete, Odunayo Adekuroye has advanced to the quarter-finals of the women’s 57kg freestyle wrestling event at the 2024 Olympics, earlier today, August 8.

Adekuroye progressed to the next round of the event after her Algerian opponent, Chaimaa Fouzia Aouissi, retired from the match due to an injury.

This makes the current Commonwealth and African champion a strong contender for a 2024 Paris Olympics medal as Nigerian sports enthusiasts continue to wait for Team Nigeria to produce one.

On a disappointing note for Team Nigeria at the 2024 Olympics, the 4x100m relay teams faced tough competition which they couldn’t overcome.

The men’s team, comprised of Favour Ashe, Kanyinsola Ajayi, Alaba Akintola, and Usheoritse Itsekiri, finished 7th in their heat with a season’s best time of 38.20s.

The women’s 4x100m team, consisting of Justina Eyakpobeyan, Favour Ofili, Rosemary Chukwuma, and Tima Godbless, also fell short by finishing 6th in their heat with a season’s best time of 42.70s.

This means that Team Nigeria could end the day without a medal as the 2024 Olympics ends in three days.

As it stands, Nigeria’s best chance of winning a medal at the Paris Olympics is in the 100m hurdles in which world record holder, Tobi Amusan is still waxing strong.
