2024 Olympics: Coach Randy Waldrum Insists Super Falcons Can Beat Any Team

The coach of the Super Falcons of Nigeria, Randy Waldrum, has stressed that his players have all it takes to take on any team in the world despite losing two successive games at the women’s football event of the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The Super Falcons are preparing for their last group stage at the Paris Olympics, which is against Japan at 4 p.m. later today, July 31.

Despite suffering losses to Brazil and Spain in their first two games, with scores of 1-0 in each, the Super Falcons still hold hope of advancing to the quarter-finals of the tournament.

Their fate hangs in the balance as they need to secure a victory against Japan while also relying on Spain to defeat Brazil, which could potentially land them in second place in the group or even secure a spot as one of the two best-losing teams to advance to the next stage.

After the recent loss to Spain, Waldrum emphasized the strength of his team, acknowledging that they had faced two of the best teams in the world and demonstrated their ability to compete at the highest level.

“We lost to two of the best teams in the world. Spain is the top team in the world, and Brazil are in the top 10,” coach Randy Waldrum said, according to ESPN.

“We have shown that we could have got something out of those matches. It shows we can play against anybody in the world.”

The Super Falcons will draw on past successes, including their impressive performance at the 2000 Olympics when they reached the quarter-finals after securing a historic victory over Japan, marking Africa’s first win in the tournament.

Despite their absence from the Olympics since the 2008 Beijing games, the Falcons aim to leverage their rich history and previous achievements, with Waldrum becoming only the second coach, following the late Ismaila Mabo, to lead the Super Falcons to both the World Cup and the Olympic Games.
