Japan’s forward, Riko Ueki, has issued a strong message to the Super Falcons of Nigeria ahead of their Group C clash at the 2024 Olympic Games.

The Asian champions are set to face Nigeria in their final group game at the Stade de la Beaujoire.

After a challenging start to their campaign with a 2-1 loss to Spain, the Nadeshiko rallied to secure a 2-1 victory over Brazil.

As they head into the crucial game against Nigeria at 4 p.m. today, July 31, a draw would secure their spot in the quarter-finals, while the Super Falcons must win to make it through.

Ahead of the tie, Ueki emphasized the importance of a strong defensive approach and expressed confidence in their ability to find openings in the Nigerian defence.

She said aggression in defence is one of Japan’s key strengths and highlighted the potential to change the situation if they start on the right foot.

“Of course, we want to score goals through attack, but if we can get on the right foot, that can change the situation,” Ueki said according to Nissan Sports.

“Aggression in defence is one of our strengths. They’re not the type to build up plays, so we need to find an opening up front.”

On the Nigerian side, Halimat Ayinde has called for unwavering support for the Super Falcons ahead of their decisive clash with Japan.

With two successive losses against Brazil and Spain, the Super Falcons must secure a victory against the Asian champions to keep their hopes alive for advancing to the quarter-finals.

Ayinde, who unfortunately missed out on the Olympic squad due to injury, encouraged her teammates to ignore negativity and give their all on the pitch.

“Stop the bad-mouthing and give the Super Falcons all the support they need today. One love. Let’s give everything today mates, ” she wrote on X.
