Twenty-five people have been confirmed dead in a boat mishap that happened in Wamakko local government area of Sokoto state.
According to a source, “A canoe with about forty passengers capsized on the Dundaye River in the Wamakko local government area of the state.
“The victims, who are primarily women and children, were on their way to their farms across the river when the accident happened.
“However, about fifteen victims were rescued by swimmers in the village while about twenty-five were still missing as searching continues.”
Confirming the incident, Nasir Garba Kalambaina, Special Adviser to the Sokoto state governor on State Emergency Management Agency, said a rescue operation team and National Emergency Management Agency officials had been mobilised to the village for a rescue operation.
Kalambaina attributed the mishap to the overflow of River Dundaye in the Wamakko local government area of the state.
