Five persons have been killed in a tragic shooting at a nursing home in Daruvar in Croatia.

The incident on Monday left several others wounded, according to state media.

An unidentified gunman entered the nursing home located approximately 130 kilometers (80 miles) east of Zagreb and opened fire, as reported by the state broadcaster HRT.

The gunman later fled the scene but was apprehended by police.

Croatian newspaper Jutarnji List identified the alleged shooter as a “war veteran” who tragically killed his mother along with other residents and staff members.

Croatia, which experienced a war of independence during the breakup of Yugoslavia from 1991 to 1995, rarely witnesses gun related violence.

This shooting has shocked the nation, as it comes in the wake of last year’s back-to-back mass shootings in neighboring Serbia.

Among those incidents was a horrific school shooting in Belgrade that claimed the lives of 10 people.

Authorities have continued investigation to understand the motive behind the heartbreaking event.
The Croatian community remains in mourning as they process the devastating loss of lives in what should have been a place of care and safety.
