Mpox, also known as monkeypox, is a rare disease caused by a virus. It leads to rashes and flu-like symptoms.
Mpox spreads through close contact with someone who’s infected. You can also get it from an infected animal.
As it continues to pose health risks, it’s crucial to take proactive measures to protect yourself and others. Here are seven essential steps you can follow to prevent mpox infection:
1. Avoid excessive skin contact with people
If you’re at risk for mpox but haven’t yet completed your vaccination, consider altering activities that involve close physical contact, such as sexual encounters or attending events where minimal clothing is worn. Avoiding skin-to-skin contact and steering clear of anyone with visible rashes can lower your risk.
2. Stay away from infected animals or people
Mpox can spread through direct contact with the rash or lesions of an infected person. Avoid kissing, hugging, cuddling, or engaging in sexual activities with someone who has mpox. In regions where mpox is endemic, avoid contact with animals, particularly rodents and primates, as they can carry the virus.
3. Avoid sharing personal items
Do not share eating utensils, cups, bedding, towels, or clothing with someone who has mpox. If you or someone in your household is infected, adhere to strict cleaning and disinfecting protocols to prevent the spread of the virus.
4. Wash your hands regularly
COVID taught us the importance of regular handwashing, and now is the time to keep up that habit. Frequent handwashing with soap and water, or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, is one of the best ways to prevent infection. Make sure to wash your hands, especially before eating, touching your face, or after using the bathroom.

5. Check yourself for signs and symptoms
After potential exposure, keep an eye on your health for 21 days. If you notice any symptoms, particularly a rash, seek medical advice promptly. Early detection and treatment can prevent further spread of the virus.
6. Get yourself vaccinated
It is important to get vaccinated. The vaccine is the primary preventive measure against mpox. For optimal protection, you should receive two doses, spaced four weeks apart. If you’ve only had the first dose and more than four weeks have passed, it’s not too late to get the second dose. Consult with your healthcare provider to determine if the vaccine is recommended for you. If you’ve already recovered from mpox, vaccination may not be necessary.
7. Educate others
Staying informed about the signs, symptoms, and transmission of mpox is essential. Share this knowledge with others to help curb the spread of the infection. The more people are aware, the better equipped we all are to prevent outbreaks.
By following these seven steps, you can significantly reduce your risk of contracting and spreading mpox. Stay vigilant and prioritise your health and the health of those around you.
