Abia State government has begun recovering of public school lands encroached on by individuals in the state, vowing not to stop until the occupiers completely vacate.

The commissioner for information, Okey Kanu announced this while briefing journalists on the conduct of this week’s Executive Council meeting, chaired by the governor, Alex Otti in Umuahia, the capital.
“The government will not back out from the programme of recovering all the lands illegally acquired by unscrupulous individuals in our schools,” he maintained.

“The committee in charge of the exercise will not back out no matter the push back from those who may have engaged in this selfish take over of the school lands.”

He said the committee, chaired by the chief of staff to the governor, Caleb Ajagba, had recovered the portion of Government College, Umuahia, which had been encroached on.

However, his counterpart of the ministry of tertiary education, Uche Emeh-Uche denied that the government destroyed structures on the encroached portion of the college illegally.

“What the committee demolished last weekend at the college, were structures at foundation level and the rest of them,” said Eme-Uche, who is a member of the committee.

“This government is against destruction of property, especially when it is not on the way. Those not demolished will be put to proper use. It would be wasteful to demolish them.”
