Abia govt pleased with Northern community in Umuahia over improved sanitation

The Abia state government has commended the residents of Eket Street by Owerri road in Umuahia for the improvement in the sanitary condition of their surroundings.

The street, popularly known as Ama Hausa, is a predominant Northern area, which also hosts the Umuahia Central Mosque.

Addressing the Northern community, the Commissioner for Environment, Philemon Asonye Ogbonna said the environmental conditions of the area have tremendously improved, saying the Northern traders and other residents in the area have keyed into Abia state government’s clean environment initiatives.

Ogbonna who also inspected a spot near the Umuahia Central Mosque that has been salvaged from erosion menace, said the ongoing reconstruction of the Owerri road is almost complete.

The Commissioner also visited the Orie Ugba market and motor parks and warned traders and transporters against messing up the environment.

Responding, the leader of the Hausa community in Abia, Alhaji Yaro Danladi commended the Abia State Governor, Alex Otti for being detribalized in his policies, adding that the Northern community would maintain a clean environment and sustain their support for the Abia state government.

Meanwhile, 70 environmental sanitation defaulters were on Saturday, arrested in different locations in Umuahia and brought to Abia State Environmental Court in the Ministry of Environment Umuahia for prosecution.
