Tamayo Perry, a lifeguard and surfing instructor known for his role in “Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” died on Sunday afternoon following a shark attack off Oahu, Hawaii.
Perry, 49, who also appeared in “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle” and “Blue Crush,” was attacked near Goat Island. Honolulu’s emergency services received a report from a caller who witnessed a man with apparent shark bites. Emergency personnel arrived at Malaekahana Beach just before 1 pm local time.
Rescuers used a jet ski to bring Perry to shore, where paramedics pronounced him dead, according to Shayne Enright of the Honolulu Emergency Services Department. Perry began his career with the Ocean Safety Department in July 2016 and worked as a lifeguard on the North Shore.”Tamayo was a legendary waterman and highly respected,” said Honolulu mayor Rick Blangiardi, calling Perry’s death “a tragic loss.”
Acting Honolulu Ocean Safety chief Kurt Lager described Perry as “a lifeguard loved by all,” noting his worldwide recognition as a professional surfer.”Tamayo’s personality was infectious, and as much as people loved him, he loved everyone else more.”In response to the attack, Ocean Safety personnel posted shark warnings in the area.
