Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa has sympathised with the victims of Friday’s flood and promised to provide immediate support.
Fintiri made the pledge during a visit to the affected communities of Shuwa and Kirchinga in Madagali Local Government Area on Sunday.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the flood claimed six lives and severed the Shuwa Bridge, which links Adamawa and Borno states, while also destroying houses, shops, and other valuables.
Fintiri emphasised the need for the Nigeria Meteorological Agency’s desk officer to coordinate with the state government to ensure timely sensitisation of communities predicted to experience flooding.
He assured that both his administration and the federal government are committed to addressing the poor conditions and constructing additional bridges on the Madagali/Michika highway to alleviate challenges faced on the road.
The Executive Chairman of Madagali LGA, Simon Shashi, stated that the state government has deployed relief materials to the victims, which are being distributed in various IDP camps.
The Head of Operations for the National Emergency Management Agency, Ladan Ayuba, confirmed six deaths and 14,000 displaced persons.
He also noted that other affected communities include Kirchinga, Duhu, Mayowandu, Jahili, Kokohu, Lumadu, Zhau, Palam, Kwambula, and Shuware.
