As the world grapples with the challenges of food security, climate change, and economic instability, an agriculture expert in Bauchi, Dr Ilayasu Aliyu Gital, has advocated the need to revive home gardening.
Dr Gital, who spoke in an exclusive interview with Arewa PUNCH in Bauchi on the transformative power of urban farming and home gardening, highlighted the success stories, challenges, and opportunities in this rapidly growing movement.
He said, “In the face of rising food prices, dwindling employment opportunities, and a growing need for sustainable living, urban farming, and home gardening need to be revived as a beacon of hope for millions of people in Nigeria.
“These innovative practices are not only providing a reliable source of fresh farm produce but also creating new avenues for employment and income generations.”
Gital added that “Home gardening, a traditional practice that dates back to the inception of agriculture, has been neglected by many Nigerians in recent times.
“However, the importance of embracing home gardening as a sustainable farming method that aligns with modern farming techniques can not be overemphasised.
“Home gardening offers numerous benefits, including soil and environmental protection, food security, and economic stability.”
He notes that home gardens are less susceptible to insects, pests, and diseases, making them a more sustainable option.
Gital shares personal experiences, including using proceeds from his backyard tomato harvest to pay a significant bill.
He also cites the example of a former federal ministry director who resigned to expand her home garden into a lucrative farm.
In the same vein, a gardener in Bauchi, Yushe’u Na’alolo reveals that “gardening has become a thriving business, with women in Bauchi producing spices and seedlings in their backyards, and generating substantial income.”
Na’alolo encourages others to follow suit to maximise their earnings.
