The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Ms Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, has highlighted Nigeria’s ongoing technology revolution driven by artificial intelligence, machine learning, and automation.

Speaking at a breakfast meeting titled “Sustainability in the AI Era: Business Growth and Employee Retention,” she emphasised.

She added that this revolution was reshaping industries and transforming the economy.

In a Monday statement, Onyejeocha noted that AI’s integration into business operations profoundly impacts the Nigerian labour market, unlocking new levels of productivity and innovation.

“While some jobs may be lost, many new roles require higher-level skills in data analysis, AI system management, and cybersecurity,” she stated.

She stressed the importance of preparing the workforce for those emerging opportunities to remain competitive in a rapidly changing environment.

The minister acknowledged that current decisions would significantly shape the economy and society’s future.

She said her ministry was committed to developing a workforce that fosters skill enhancement and job protection while positioning Nigeria to capitalise on opportunities presented by AI and emerging technologies.

Onyejeocha also pointed out that AI was improving efficiency in sectors like manufacturing, agriculture, finance, and healthcare.

She commended ITM services for providing a platform for leaders to share ideas and strategies for navigating the challenges of the AI era.

Onyejeocha urged businesses to consider AI’s impact on social and environmental stewardship, encouraging innovative approaches to using AI to address challenges, such as reducing carbon emissions and optimising resources.

The Managing Director of ITM Services Limited, Bukola Oyinlola-Anuwe, echoed the significance of AI in economic development, emphasising the need for collaboration among government, business leaders, and stakeholders to ensure the benefits of technological advancements are equitably shared across society.
