Ajaero: Doyin Okupe Backs Police, Says NLC Not Above The Law

The former Director-General for Obi/Datti Campaign Organization, Doyin Okupe, has said the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and its president, Joe Ajaero, are not above the law.

Doyin Okupe said this on Friday while reacting to the terrorism charge against Ajaero by the Nigeria Police.

Okupe said the threat of a nationwide strike by the NLC leadership because the Police invited its president was unwarranted.

It is good that the Ajero, NLC President, and Police face-off has ended uneventfully.  But we may have set down undesirable precedence with the subtle implications that certain privileged people are above the law. The threat of a nationwide strike by the NLC Leadership in response to an invitation from the police is unwarranted.

“The impression should not be given that those who are in the leadership of some critical organizations in the country are above the law.

“As a nation we must decide whether we want to be under the Rule of law, no matter how tenuous that may be, or the Rule of the Mob,” Okupe said while reacting to Thursday’s visit.

The former aide to ex-presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan defended the police’s right to invite any high-profile person.

He, however, advised the Nigerian Police to avoid situations of creating an impression of oppressive force in their operations.

Also, the police may in some circumstances, adopt the approach to visit some high network people or people not directly involved in criminality, in their residences or places of work. It does not demean the Police in anyway.

“The Nigerian Police must avoid situations whereby in the discharge of their lawful duties, they give the impression of an oppressive force instead of a friendly and a professional one,” Okupe advised on his X handle.
