- Alejandro Garnacho has already put in a strong contender for miss of the season during Manchester United's clash against Fulham
- The 20-year-old winger scuffed wide with the goal gaping against the Cottages in the dying embers of the game at Old Trafford
- Joshua Zirkzee spared the Red Devils' blushes on the opening night of the Premier League season with a late winner on Friday
Manchester United began their Premier League season with a 1-0 win over Fulham on Friday night.
However, one moment fans would rather forget was Alejandro Garnacho missing a very easy opportunity.
The Red Devils needed a strong start to the season, as Erik ten Hag's future as Manchester United manager remains uncertain. Therefore, securing three points at Old Trafford was crucial.
With the game tied at 0-0, new signing Joshua Zirkzee scored the winning goal in the 87th minute, instantly becoming a hero on his debut.
Just minutes later, Garnacho experienced the opposite of the Dutch forward's moment of glory.
Fulham defender Calvin Bassey completely missed the ball to send Marcus Rashford through on goal.
Cottagers goalkeeper Bernd Leno closed down the angle and Rashford played a poor ball to Garnacho, who still should have made it 2-0, potentially producing an early miss of the season contender.
Meanwhile, Opta reports that Zirkzee is the 15th Dutch player to score on his Premier League debut.
He is also the fourth to achieve this while at Manchester United, following Ruud van Nistelrooy, Alexander Büttner, and Donny van de Beek.
With only 12 touches since he came on in the 61st minute, Zirkzee was named Player of the Match.
Erik ten Hag receives heat from United fans
Legit.ng earlier reported that Manchester United's 2024/25 season began on a disappointing note with a defeat to Rosenborg, and manager Erik ten Hag has been bashed by the club’s fans for the defeat.
The Dutch manager, who featured five first-team regulars from last season, lost by a last-minute goal by Noah Holm.
Though it was only a friendly match, the result drew significant criticism from both Ten Hag and the fans, particularly since the Premier League team conceded more than 20 shots during the game.
