Anambra State has emphasised the importance of effective waste management structures and systems to safeguard the environment. The state government also reaffirmed its commitment to recycling plastic waste, securing more environmentally friendly solutions through strategic partnerships and innovative solutions.
This was made known at a stakeholders’ meeting on Plastic Waste Recycling, which was held at Hilton Leisure Hotel, Awka, Anambra State, organised by the Anambra State Government, in partnership with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Coca-Cola Foundation and TechnoServe.
In a statement, the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Felix Odimegwu, said that plastic waste becomes a menace to the environment when not separated and channelled for recycling.
He highlighted the alignment of the Nigeria Plastic Solutions Activity with Anambra’s strategic vision for sustainable development, stating that under Governor Charles Soludo, the state has actively pursued initiatives to reduce waste, promote recycling, and foster a culture of sustainability.
Odimegwu also announced the second season of the ‘All Anambra Communities Plastic Waste Recovery Challenge,’ aimed at reducing waste, promoting recycling, creating employment for residents, and reinforcing the state’s commitment to a cleaner, greener future.
The Commissioner said that partnering on projects like this is one of several ways the state government is creating awareness of the importance of waste separation for recycling, and generating economic prosperity through the circular economy.
