A prominent figure within the All Progressives Congress (APC), Pope Amaefuna, has made a compelling case for zoning the party’s governorship ticket to Anambra South in the upcoming 2025 elections.
According to Amaefuna, in a statement issued in Abuja, political zoning is not just a strategy but a principle that ensures equity and stability in Nigeria’s diverse political landscape.
He pointed to Article 20(IV) (e) of the APC Constitution, which mandates the equitable rotation of political offices, reflecting the party’s commitment to balance and fairness.
Citing historical precedents, Amaefuna recalled the foresight of Dim Odumegwu Ojukwu, who in 2010 advocated for zoning power to Anambra North, leading to a period of political stability and fairness in the state. This move, according to Amaefuna, set a precedent that has benefited Anambra’s political environment over the past decade.

Amaefuna warned against abandoning the zoning principle, highlighting its role in maintaining peace and progress in Anambra. He stressed that any attempt to disrupt this arrangement could lead to political instability and serve only the interests of a few individuals rather than the greater good of the state.
The APC stalwart noted that the party can no longer afford to play the role of opposition in Anambra. He emphasized the necessity for the party to field a strong candidate from Anambra South, warning that failure to do so would be tantamount to political suicide. Amaefuna underscored that the electorate’s preference for zoning must be respected to avoid alienating voters.
Contrary to claims that zoning fosters mediocrity, Amaefuna pointed out that several non-zoned leaders have been implicated in corruption. He argued that Anambra South boasts a wealth of qualified individuals capable of providing effective leadership, debunking the notion that zoning limits the pool of competent candidates.
Furthermore, Amaefuna cautioned those opposing zoning, suggesting that their stance could undermine future aspirations for an Igbo presidency. He argued that advocating against zoning at the state level while supporting it federally represents ideological hypocrisy.
Highlighting the established political culture in Anambra, Amaefuna stated that any party disregarding the zoning formula is unlikely to succeed in the forthcoming election. He urged the APC to unite behind a strong candidate from Anambra South, capable of challenging APGA’s dominance at the polls.
Amaefuna also called for strict action against APC members conspiring with APGA to sabotage the party’s efforts. He stressed the need for the national working committee of the APC to identify and penalize such individuals to safeguard the party’s interests.
Speaking further, Amaefuna urged the APC to overcome internal divisions and present a unified front in 2025.
He called on party members to support a candidate from Anambra South to ensure a competitive and fair election, reiterating that zoning remains the key to equitable and stable governance in Anambra state.
