British tennis icon, Andy Murray, has withdrawn from the tennis singles event at the 2024 Paris Olympics due to his ongoing recovery from back surgery.

This will however not stop Andy Murray from competing in the doubles event alongside his countryman, Dan Evans.

The two-time Olympics gold medallist who is expected to retire after his fifth appearance at the Olympics, believes that focusing on the men’s doubles will give him the best chance of securing another medal.

In a statement, the 37-year-old British former world number one expressed his excitement about teaming up with Dan Evans, emphasizing that they have been performing well in practice.

Murray, who claimed gold in singles at both the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympics, as well as silver in mixed doubles, considers representing Great Britain in the doubles event as a fitting culmination to his Olympic career.

“I’ve decided to withdraw from the singles to concentrate on the doubles with Dan,” Andy Murray said on Thursday, July 25.

“Our practice has been great and we’re playing well togetherLookingng forward to getting started and representing GB one more time.”

Having been forced to withdraw from the singles event due to a spinal cyst, Murray’s final singles match took place during a brief second-round appearance at Queen’s Club against Jordan Thompson in June 2024.

Despite this setback, Murray remains determined to make the most of his final Olympic appearance.
