Women from St Matthew’s Church in the Maitama district of the Diocese of Abuja, Anglican Communion, have provided empowerment to over 50 widows in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) through financial support for small-scale businesses.
The initiative was organised by the Let Your Light Shine Sisterhood Prayer Fellowship in the church.
During a dedication and thanksgiving service held yesterday, the fellowship’s president, Lady Angela Ohuabunwa, shared the group’s motivation for the initiative to help widows navigate the country’s current economic challenges.
Ohuabunwa emphasised the significance of uplifting those in need. “We felt a strong calling to empower these widows, especially in light of the hardships many are experiencing.”
She further called on the federal government to implement policies that would improve the living conditions of underprivileged widows across Nigeria.
While highlighting the role of women in the family, the president spoke about the importance of wives supporting their husbands and building stable homes.
“We are women who build homes. A home can be like a wall falling apart amid infidelity and marital discord. But we are here today to celebrate our stability and impact.
“You can stand in your marriage with God. All things are possible. There is power in submission, and we shouldn’t engage in power struggles with our husbands. The man is the head of the household,” she said.
She encouraged women who wish to join the fellowship, stating, “This is a place of growth and support. Christ dwells here, and we always strive to reach out to those in need.”
While reflecting on her commitment, Ohuabunwa noted her tradition of reaching out to widows in her birth month of September, emphasising the importance of providing encouragement and financial support to those who feel rejected or abandoned.
When asked about governmental responsibilities towards empowering women, particularly widows and the less privileged, Ohuabunwa expressed concern over the authorities neglecting this issue.
“I have spoken on this several times and will continue to raise awareness. Supporting widows is akin to sowing in God’s vineyard, and the blessings of such actions are immense,” she stated.
Ohuabunwa concluded by advising women to be patient when entering marriage, underscoring that patience is key to building lasting relationships. “Patience is crucial. When entering into marriage, it’s important to embody that quality,” she advised.
