Any Coach Can Succeed With Super Eagles – Coach Eguavoen Insists

The Interim head coach of the Super Eagles, Augustine Eguavoen, believes any coach can succeed with the national team following the team’s 3-0 win over the Benin Republic in a 2025 AFCON qualifier on Saturday in Uyo.

The win marked a significant turnaround for the Super Eagles, who had faced criticism following a series of disappointing performances. Eguavoen’s leadership and the team’s impressive performance have sparked discussions about the possibility of him taking on the role of head coach permanently.

During the match on Saturday, the Super Eagles showcased their quality, with Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen delivering standout performances with goals. Eguavoen’s strategic decisions, including a change in formation and impactful substitutions, played a key role in the team’s success.

The victory not only redeemed the team from their previous loss to the Benin Republic but also demonstrated their potential to compete at the highest level.

While reacting to the turnaround of the Super Eagles, Eguavoen emphasized the importance of mindset and the players’ ability to deliver top-tier performances when under pressure.

“The players are always there. You know when much is expected from Nigerians; that’s when we see performance,” Eguavoen said after the game.

“We’ve been getting a lot of backlashes, and the boys didn’t know it, and we know we have the caliber of players to beat any team.

“So anybody can come in and do the same job; it’s not a problem. It’s just the mindset. We have the potential. It’s how you check out your opponents, then go out and do the job.”

The coach added, “We have quality players, and we can decide to play any system. It’s something we discussed, and I also slept over it. And I know that with the caliber of players that we have, we can decide to play any formation and be successful.”

Note that the Super Eagles of Nigeria are currently in Kigali to take on Rwanda in their second 2025 AFCON qualifiers. The game is expected to kick off at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, September 10.
