Urges govt to restore citizens’ confidence in governance

The Association of Professional Bodies of Nigeria (APBN), yesterday, reiterated the need for the federal and state governments to tackle rising inflation, unemployment, and economic disparities plaguing the nation.

It also emphasised the urgent need for policies that would promote sustainable economic growth, as well as tackle hunger and poverty in the land. President of the APBN, Manason Rubain, who gave the charge during the association’s board meeting in Lagos, said the crucial issue also centred on how the Nigerian economy could be diversified?

He, however, lamented that all forms of industries and enterprises had been decimated by unfavourable economic environment, saying: “The ongoing challenges in the healthcare sector call for increased investment in healthcare infrastructure, better funding for public health initiatives, and policies that ensure equitable access to healthcare for all Nigerians.”

“The decline in educational standards and the out-of-school children crisis are alarming. We should push for reforms that prioritise quality education, teacher training, and the integration of digital learning tools,” he said.

The APBN President expressed concerns about the prevalence of violence, terrorism and banditry threatening national stability. He said that the endemic corruption continues to undermine development efforts and had triggered pathological loss of confidence in governance. He, therefore, advised the government to constantly integrate Nigerians in its policies, decision-making and implementation.

Meanwhile, President of the NSE, Margaret Oguntala, said the rapid pace of change in today’s world requires that professionals remain agile and adaptable.
She said that continuous professional development is not just a necessity, but also a lifeline that keeps them relevant and competitive.

“We must invest in education and skills development, ensuring that members of the association are equipped to meet the demands of an ever-evolving global landscape. I encourage us to share resources and best practices across professions, fostering a culture of learning and innovation that benefits not only the members but also the nation as a whole,” Oguntala said.

She added that there was need for continuous advocacy for policy reforms, youth engagement and mentorship, as well as promoting Nigerian expertise internationally.
