Former Brazilian footballer, Edu Gaspar has decided to step down from his role as Arsenal’s sporting director.
Recall that Edu Gaspar played for Arsenal from 2001 to 2005, contributing to winning two league titles, including being part of the historic ‘Invincibles’ team in the 2003-2004 season.
Edu Gaspar returned to the Gunners as technical director in the summer of 2019 and was subsequently promoted to sporting director in November 2022.
“This was an incredibly difficult decision to make,” Edu shared on Monday, October 4. “Now it is time for me to pursue a new challenge. Arsenal will always hold a special place in my heart, and I wish the club and its supporters all the best in the future.”
Edu played a key role in bringing manager Mikel Arteta to the club, culminating in an FA Cup victory at the end of Arteta’s first season. While Arsenal hasn’t secured major silverware, Edu has been instrumental in helping to shape the team into a serious title contender.
Reflecting on his time at the club, Edu expressed gratitude for the opportunity to collaborate with many remarkable individuals and to contribute to a significant chapter in Arsenal’s history.
“I’ve truly enjoyed working with a fantastic group of colleagues across our men’s, women’s, and academy teams, especially Mikel, who has become a dear friend,” he remarked.
In recent seasons, Arsenal have consistently finished as Premier League runners-up to Manchester City. Under Edu’s leadership, significant players like Martin Odegaard, Ben White, Gabriel, Gabriel Jesus, and Declan Rice joined the squad, while early signings like David Luiz and Willian had mixed impacts.
Arsenal co-chair Josh Kroenke acknowledged Edu’s contributions, saying, “We respect Edu’s decision and are grateful for his significant dedication to advancing the club. Change and evolution are essential to our organization, and we remain committed to our strategy of winning major trophies. Our succession plan will prioritize this ongoing ambition.”
