An interdenominational concert, with the theme, “Sounds, Strings Hymnal Concert”, held at the University of Lagos Chapel Annex, Akoka, Yaba, Lagos, recently. It brought together hymnal lovers and other lovers of good music.
Speaking at the inaugural programme that also featured Freegift International Drama (Another Chance), the convener, Mrs. Lydia Eke, hinged the essence of the concert on reviving hymnal singing that is gradually missing in churches and Christian congregations today.
“What we have today in Christian gatherings are noises that are gradually and insidiously eroding the singing of traditional hymns that naturally convey deep messages with the potency of addressing all problems, both spiritual and physical, as well as lifting up the soul.
“Another reason is that many young people complain that hymns are boring and we want to use this medium to disabuse their minds and ensure the next generation key into this revival. This is the first edition of this programme and we do not want people to just dwell on praise and worship but to see the impact of hymns and Christian drama.
“This is the reason we have brought together hymnal singers from various backgrounds including Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion); The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG); Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM); Chapel of Light and Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria with a view to making the participants listen and enjoy the lyrics in hymns that naturally lift up the souls of singers,” she said.
One of the special guests, Acting Chairman, Editorial Board, Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Pastor Andrew Umoru, said the Church is the centre of excellence through hymnal singing,
He emphasised that hymns contain messages that inspire, edify and also entertain with the benefits all encompassing, adding that hymns can be described as deeper sense of praise and workshop.
He lamented songs rendered today during praise and worship, which, according to him, are not inspiriting and not beneficial to the soul. Umoru said praise and worship are also very vital before God as He is praised for Who He is while He is worshipped for what He has done, emphasising that Hymn is also praise and worship but in more intense form.
