Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has mourned the death of popular musician, Onyeka Onwenu, describing her exit as a sad loss for Nigeria.

Atiku Abubakar said late Onyeka Onwenu was an accomplished journalist and musician who contributed much in defending the voice of women.

In his condolence on Wednesday, the former presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said, “I am so sad to learn of the passing of Onyeka Onwenu, MFR. Onyeka was a multi-talented woman whose impact would stand the test of time. She was a transformational journalist whose works, such as the documentary “Nigeria: The Squandering of Riches,” are timeless.

“Her musical prowess led to multiple hits, which will continue to resonate long after her exit. On behalf of my family, I express my deepest condolences to her beloved family and friends and the musical fraternity. May God grant her family the fortitude to bear her departure.”

Meanwhile, Enugu North Senator, Okey Ezea, has described the death of Onyeka Onwenu as shocking. Senator Ezea said it was regrettable that she did not live to see the unity she preached in her songs.

In his condolence message on Wednesday, Ezea said late Onwenu was a patriot who spoke directly to the issues affecting the nation.

It’s quite shocking to learn of the sudden death of Ms Onyeka Onwenu, one of Nigeria’s most iconic singers. For some of us who grew up in the 1980s, Onwenu’s sonorous songs serenaded most of the events of that era and were often enjoyed across the length and breadth of Nigeria.

“Ms Onwenu was a patriot whose songs spoke directly to the issues affecting us as a nation. It’s unfortunate that, after more than three decades of her messages of unity and love as expressed in some of her celebrated works, Nigeria is still divided and even polarised.

“Beyond music, Onwenu’s contributions to Nigeria, as exemplified in her achievements in the other national assignments she handled, are legendary.

“As she leaves us behind, may God comfort her immediate family and the rest of us who will sorely miss her. And may her soul find eternal rest in the bosom of our Lord,” Senator Ezea said.
