August 1 Protest: Kano TikToker Abusalma Released From Prison

A Kano-based TikToker, Junaidu Abdullahi, a.k.a. Abusalma, who was arrested and detained over his viral videos calling for anti-hunger nationwide protest slated for August 1, has been released from Kurmawa Custodial Centre in Kano State.

LEADERSHIP reports that Abusalma was arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Kano last week following his calls for protests against the prevailing economic hardship in the country and open revolt against Islamic clerics opposed to the planned protest in Northern Nigeria.

However, an online newspaper publisher and ‘RevolutionNow’ advocate, Omoyele Sowore, on Tuesday evening, said Abusalma had been eventually released from detention following a visit by a lawyer to the #EndBadGovernance advocate at the Kurmawa correctional facility.

Taking to his Facebook page, Sowore wrote: “The lawless @OfficialDSSNG has released Junaidu Abdullahi (Abusalma), the TikToker sent to Kano prison shortly after he publicised the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria on @tiktok_us

“His release followed our lawyer’s visitation to him in prison. The @OfficialDSSNG quickly approached the judge in charge of his case in Kano to obtain an order to remove him from prison and released him shortly after. He was threatened not to partake in the upcoming protest. #RevolutionNow #DaysOfRage.”
