Bauchi Emirate Strips Senator Of Traditional Title Over Alleged Insult To Governor Mohammed

The Bauchi Emirate Council has revoked the traditional title of Senator Shehu Buba Umar, who represents the Bauchi South senatorial district in the National Assembly.

Naija News reports that the decision follows accusations that Senator Umar insulted and criticized the Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed.

The controversy began after Senator Umar, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), accused Governor Mohammed, who belongs to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), of diverting palliative items intended to relieve economic hardship in the state.

These accusations were made during a press briefing last week, where Senator Umar alleged that essential supplies, including rice, corn, and fertilizer provided by the APC-led federal government, were sold by the state government instead of being distributed to the public.

In response to these allegations, the Bauchi Emirate Council convened a meeting to discuss the Senator’s conduct. Following the meeting, a letter dated August 14, 2024, and signed by Nasiru Musa on behalf of the Emirate Council’s secretary, was issued.

The letter stated that the council had resolved to strip Senator Umar of his traditional title, “Mandarin Bauchi,” due to his actions, which were deemed to be in violation of the values and traditions upheld by the Bauchi Emirate.
