The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission has called on the Nigerians living in the diaspora to prioritise investment at home.
The Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of NIDCOM, Abike Dabiri-Erewa made the call during a courtesy call to Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, at the Bauchi Government House Council Chamber on Tuesday.
Dabiri-Erewa, represented by the commission’s secretary Yakubu Bassey told the governor that the commission in on a Sensitisation and Advocacy Program to Bauchi.
She noted that the program was for the promotion of diaspora investment in northeast Nigeria stating that the commission has done the same to all the remaining geopolitical zones of the country.
She said, “The commission has recorded over 20 million Nigerians in the diaspora hence the for them to contribute to the country’s rapid development.
“NIDCOM has developed the first ever National Diaspora Policy to help the subnationals to establish state diaspora commission.”
On his part, Mohammed who expressed his enthusiasm for collaborating with NIDCOM to tap into the vast human capital potential of Nigerians living abroad, emphasised the importance of leveraging the skills and expertise of Nigerians in the diaspora to drive economic growth and development in the country.
Bala praised the efforts of NIDCOM in promoting the interests of Nigerians abroad and fostering partnerships between the diaspora community and the Nigerian government.
“The diaspora community has made significant contributions to the development of Nigeria, particularly in the healthcare, engineering, and technology sectors.
“There is a need to address the challenges faced by Nigerians living abroad, including mistrust and frustration with the system and it is important to create more opportunities for Nigerians in the diaspora to invest in their home country and contribute to its development.
“To achieve this more nursing schools, teaching hospitals, and other institutions should be developed,” the governor said.
Mohammed expressed his willingness to collaborate with NIDCOM to identify investment opportunities and create an enabling environment for diaspora Nigerians to invest in their home country.
