The General Superintendent of Deeper Christian Life Ministries, William Kumuyi, has said it is possible to achieve a better country without any resort to destruction, grievance or retaliation.
He added that middle ground by way of a round table discussion involving the Federal Government and the youth may be necessary to assuage feelings and chart a way forward.
Kumuyi spoke on Wednesday while fielding questions from newsmen shortly after arriving at the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, Rivers State ahead of the ‘Change Makers Initiative International’ conference scheduled between to hold between August 15 and 20, 2024, at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in the Rivers State capital.
He spoke concerning the recently concluded protest against hardship and bad governance by some youths across the country, emphasising that change can come about through different methods.
Kumuyi stated, “When we say that there should be a change, there could be different methods of bringing up a change. The young people might feel this is the way to bring the change, older people might feel this is the way to bring the change. Even the government in a few years will realise, will understand there must be a change, but this is the way.
“If we can harness all our efforts and energy together and we are not trying to defeat anyone. We’re not going to try to crush anyone. The youth and government, and everyone knowing that we all have the right constitutionally to bring a change, so we all get together, we brainstorm and we’ll strategise.
“If this is not working, will this work? A sort of that round conference table that we’re able to say ‘why don’t we go this direction?’ If we have been doing it this way, expecting change, and the change has not come, is there a better way? Is there an alternative?
“I think when we love one another, and we respect and honour one another and then we’re able to sit down without any kind of a grievance or retaliation or destroying anything, we’re not at anyone. All we want is a better country. We’ll have it eventually!”
On the purpose of the conference, he said it is first a non-denominational initiative, explaining that looking around one will see a lot of things happening and ‘we see that we can do better’ to achieve the desired change.
He said, “Every individual, every family and every institution can do better. And if we all one by one do better in various areas, in our relationship and interaction and the workplace and the college everywhere, there’ll be change in the nation.”
While noting that it doesn’t take a mighty effort to effect a change, he stressed that there was no better time to begin the change than now.
He added, “As individuals, as families, and then we carry the change to our offices and everywhere. All that we are mourning, and groaning about, things will turn around for the better.”
