Some communities in Calabar, the Cross River capital, are currently in darkness following the destruction of many electricity poles by a windstorm.

In a statement on Sunday, the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company informed its customers in Calabar that the outage being experienced was due to the havoc caused by the windstorm.

“We wish to inform our esteemed customers in Calabar that the outage currently experienced is a result of a heavy wind storm that damaged many poles in our network,“ the Disco said.

Some of the affected areas include the University of Calabar, Federal Housing Estate, Transcorp, EPZ Complex and others.

The PHED assured its customers the situation is being given urgent attention, saying its technical team is currently working assiduously to ensure power restoration.

The statement read further, “Affected feeders include, Bao Yao Iron and Steel, OLAM, Niger Mill, EPZ complex, MCC, Federal Housing, 8 Miles, Unical, Amika, Transcorp, EPZ 1, Essien Town, Leopard and Diamond.

“We assure our customers that this situation is being given the very urgent attention that it deserves, as our technical team is working assiduously to ensure that supply is restored as soon as possible.

“We appeal for patience and understanding during this time.“

The PUNCH observed that this incident happened at a time when Nigerians are battling with incessant grid collapses, thereby compounding their electricity woes.
