A former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, has underscored the vital role of culture in fostering national unity and social cohesion.

Speaking on Saturday at the 2024 Waja Cultural Festival (ToyirWiih), which was held at Talasse Township Stadium in Balanga local government area of Gombe State and themed “Celebrating Culture as a Vehicle for Integration,” Mustapha opined that apart from promoting social cohesion, cultural heritage can become a living part of the economy, transforming lives, creating jobs, and promoting prosperity if traditions are integrated into modern markets.

“The traditional craftsmanship of the Waja is evident in pottery, beadwork, textiles, and other artisanal creations, which represent a wealth of cultural assets that, when properly valued, can drive local economic opportunities,” Mustapha stated.

He commended the Waja people for holding tightly to their customs passed down through generations, which he said has contributed to their incredible strength and unwavering commitment to their identity.

The former SGF noted that the Waja people’s connection to their land, reflected in their agricultural practices and architectural styles, demonstrates respect, balance and sustainability.

According to him, cultural resilience is vital in today’s fragmented society, where pressures from urbanisation and limited infrastructure threaten cultural heritage.

He encouraged supporting traditional crafts to foster pride, continuity and sustainable growth.

Our correspondent reports that the festival showcased the Waja community’s rich cultural heritage through music, dance and artistry.
