Nasarawa Amazons will on Wednesday play Bayelsa Queens in the final of the Betsy Obaseki Women Football Tournament (BOWFT) after both teams won their respective semifinals played on Monday at the University of Benin Sports Complex in Benin City.
Nasarawa Amazons defeated the defending champions, Edo Queens, 6-7 on penalties, while Bayelsa Queens defeated Heartland Queens 2-0 to sail through to the final of the FIFA-accredited tournament, a brainchild of the Edo State First Lady, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki.
In the first semifinal between Edo Queens and Nasarawa Amazons, the ladies from Lafia opened the scoring in 39 seconds through Janet Akekoromowei, who capitalised on a defensive error by the host team.
Edo Queens’ Chioma Moses levelled the score in the 16th minute, while an Ijamilusi Folashade 50th minute goal gave the homers, who could not hold on to the lead for long as Akekoromowei got the equaliser for the Lafia girls in the 63rd minute from the penalty spot.
Efforts by the two teams to increase the tally proved fruitless as the game ended 2-2 after 90 minutes.
The game went to penalties, and Amazon defeated Edo Queens 5-4 to book their place in the final against Bayelsa Queens, who defeated Heartland Queens 2-0 in the second semifinal game at the same venue.
Edo Queens will play Heartland Queens FC in the third-place game on Wednesday.
