Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) president-elect, Afam Osigwe, has pledged free legal services to protesters.
Afam Osigwe – Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) – said Nigeria lawyers have to offer support and legal services to protesters who are expressing their grievances through peaceful protest.
He added that it remains the duty of lawyers to ensure the voices of the oppressed are heard and justice prevails.
In a statement on Thursday, Osigwe, who will assume office this month, said lawyers must volunteer their time and expertise for free to citizens who require such services as a result of the hunger protests across the country.
“As we face economic challenges that have sparked widespread concerns, it is crucial to remember that the right to protest is a fundamental aspect of our democracy.
“As legal professionals, we are uniquely positioned to support those who seek to express their grievances through peaceful protest. It is our duty to ensure that the voices of the oppressed are heard and that justice prevails.
“I encourage all lawyers to stand up for our nation and be the pillars of support our citizens need during these times.
“Let us volunteer our time and expertise to provide pro bono legal services to those who may need them as a result of the protests. Together, we can help protect the rights of those who may face legal challenges,” Osigwe said.
He added, “As we move forward this month, let us focus on innovation, collaboration, and impactful change. We must come together as a united force dedicated to justice, fairness, and the protection of human rights.”
