The United Kingdom has strengthened Nigeria’s military capabilities by donating a state-of-the-art counter-insurgency training facility to the Nigerian Armed Forces.

The facility, situated in Ogun State, was officially handed over on Tuesday during a ceremony attended by senior military officials from both nations, as outlined in a statement by the British High Commission in Nigeria.

Constructed with funding from the UK Ministry of Defence, the facility was developed through a collaborative effort between Royal Engineers from the British Army and their counterparts in the Nigerian Army Engineers Corps.

This new training center is designed to improve the realism of military exercises, equipping Nigerian soldiers with the skills needed to face the complexities of modern warfare and future missions.

During the handover ceremony, Jonny Baxter, the Deputy High Commissioner, highlighted the strong and enduring security partnership between the UK and Nigeria.

The UK has deep interests in Nigeria’s development, security, and stability. We enjoy a long-standing security and defence relationship, underpinned by a shared desire to support regional and international peace and security,” Baxter stated.

He also underscored the UK’s ongoing commitment to Nigeria, noting that the British government provides significant security and developmental support, including the provision of training facilities and essential equipment.

We provide substantial security and development support to Nigeria, including capacity-building assistance, training facilities, and equipment.

“The British Government will continue to work with Nigeria to respond to the drivers of conflict – and all these engagements we hope, will lead to better security, stability, and enhanced growth partnerships for the good of both our countries,” Baxter added.

In his remarks, the Deputy High Commissioner also honoured the sacrifices made by Nigerian soldiers in their quest to achieve peace and stability in the region, reaffirming the UK’s commitment to aiding Nigeria in its fight against insurgency.

The newly established counter-insurgency training facility is expected to play a vital role in preparing Nigerian troops for counter-insurgency missions, enhancing their ability to effectively address security challenges across the region.
