Calvin Bassey Reveals How Messi Influenced Him To Play For Nigeria

Nigeria international Calvin Bassey has shared an inspiring moment that played a pivotal role in his decision to represent the Super Eagles over the Three Lions of England.

In an interview with Sky Sports, Calvin Bassey reflected on Nigeria’s memorable encounter with Argentina during the 2018 FIFA World Cup, which left a profound impact on him. The match featured the legendary Lionel Messi, who scored an incredible goal that showcased his exceptional talent.

“When Nigeria played Argentina, they lost 2-1, but it was a good game,” Bassey told Sky Sports.

“Messi, of course—Messi is Messi, in it—he scored that outrageous goal. I think it was knee, left foot, then right foot. It was top.

“But that was more of a motivation to me to want to play for Nigeria and also play on the big stage.”

Bassey, who was born in Italy to Nigerian parents and moved to England at a young age, grew up in Newham and had the unique opportunity to represent multiple national teams, including Kenya.

However, his heart was set on Nigeria. His commitment to the Super Eagles solidified in 2021 when he accepted a call-up for the 2022 World Cup qualifiers, marking the beginning of his international career with a debut in a tense 0-0 draw against longstanding rivals Ghana.

As he reminisced about his pivotal moment during Nigeria’s group stage match against Argentina, Bassey noted that it was not merely the loss that moved him but the team’s determination and resilience in the face of adversity.

The African giants needed only a draw to advance to the knockout stage, but despite the heartbreaking last-gasp defeat, it was the way the Nigerian team fought until the end that won Bassey over. The passion and unity of the squad resonated with him, leading to his decision to don the green and white jersey and represent Nigeria.

Since making his debut for Nigeria in 2022, Bassey has rapidly established himself as an integral part of the Eagles’ lineup. His contributions were vital in their journey to the final of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) earlier this year, where the team ultimately secured a silver medal. To date, he has made an impressive 28 appearances for the Super Eagles.
