The Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) has mentioned cholera and yellow fever as two deadly sicknesses that usually spread fast faster during rainy season.
“As with cholera, cases of yellow fever also increase during the rainy season.
Mosquito control helps reduce the risk of yellow fever infection,” they revealed.
According to the agency, the bacteria, vibrio cholerae, that causes cholera is commonly found in contaminated water and food.
The urge to decimate cholera due to the dynamic risk assessment of the cholera epidemiological situation which placed the country at a very high risk of increased cholera transmission, has led the agency to activate the National Cholera Emergency Operations Centre (EOC).
“As of 24th June 2024, a total of 1528 suspected cases and 53 deaths have been recorded across 31 States.
“The EOC will coordinate the national response, especially across the affected states to interrupt disease transmission and reduce the impact of the disease and other socioeconomic complications of this disease.

“People who consume potentially contaminated food or fruits without washing and cooking properly are at higher risk of cholera infection.
“Ensure that food is well cooked before consumption. Only consume raw food such as fruits and vegetables, after washing thoroughly with safe water.
To get rid of yellow fever, the NCDC advised Nigerians to remove stagnant water, keep their environment clean, keep their water containers covered properly and wear protective clothing to prevent mosquito bites.
