Nourishing, hydrating, and revitalising, face masks are an essential part of any skincare routine. Cleansing face masks you can make at home target major skin concerns. These are hyperpigmentation, minimising pores, reducing redness, and combating acne. While worth every penny, store-bought face masks can quickly surpass your beauty budget. Fortunately, with ingredients found right in your kitchen, you can whip up a face mask and enjoy the benefits without breaking the bank.
Take a look at some common skin concerns and how to make a face mask that’ll help:
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
Hyperpigmentation appears as darker patches on the skin, often showing up as black, brown, grey, red, or pink spots. To combat hyperpigmentation and calm your skin, mix half a tablespoon of turmeric powder with two tablespoons of pure honey in a bowl until it forms a paste. Gently massage the paste over your face. Let it sit for 10 minutes, then wash off with warm water.

Clogged pores
Clogged pores result from a buildup of dead skin cells, oil, or dirt, often leading to acne. To open up and gently clear your pores, mix two tablespoons of oatmeal with a tablespoon of baking soda in a bowl. Then add a few drops of water to form a paste. Massage the paste over your face and leave it to dry. Rinse off with warm water. Apply a moisturiser immediately.
Wrinkles
Cleansing face masks you can make at home can clear wrinkles. Wrinkles are creases or folds that appear on the skin as we age, and the skin loses elasticity. To make a mask that’ll help with this, mash an avocado in a bowl, then add one tablespoon of honey and two tablespoons of cocoa powder. Gently massage the mask over your face. Let it sit for 20 minutes, and then rinse off with warm water.

Acne
Acne is a common skin condition where the pores of your skin clog, leading to blackheads, whiteheads, and other types of pus-filled, sometimes painful pimples. An egg-white face mask can help with this. Separate the egg whites from the yolks and whisk. Dip a cotton swab into the egg whites and rub it over your face. Let it sit for 15 minutes. Wash off with a damp cloth and apply a moisturiser.
Additional tips
- Avoid using a mask if you experience skin irritation or have an allergic reaction.
- Don’t leave the mask on for too long as this could irritate your skin.
- Apply face masks once or twice a week for the best results.
- Be gentle when rinsing off the mask to avoid redness.
- Apply the mask before getting into the shower for easy removal.
- Wash your face with a gentle cleanser before applying the mask.
- Always apply a moisturiser after washing off the mask to lock in hydration.
