Content moderators, call centre agents, and other platform workers have been tasked with improving their handling of the sensitive data of clients and citizens entrusted to them.

The charge was given at a one-day free training to improve the skills of platform workers in promoting data privacy by a non-governmental organisation, the Laws & Rights Awareness Initiative.

Speaking during the training, Maimuna Usman, the project coordinator at the NGO, said as professionals on the frontlines of data handling and user interactions, the role of content moderators, call centre agents and platform workers is crucial in safeguarding the privacy and integrity of the information they manage daily.

“The insights gained today will not only enhance their ability to protect data but also strengthen the trust that users place in them,” she said.

According to her, the training, funded by the Open Collective Foundation, covered the latest data protection regulations, best practices for securing personal information, and strategies for navigating the complex challenges of handling sensitive data.

She said, “The training is part of a broader effort to promote data privacy, ethical practices, and the rights of individuals in the digital world. With the increasing amount of personal data being generated and shared online, data protection has become more critical than ever.”

Usman explained that the training will empower content moderators and platform workers and make them more employable

She said, “By providing these platform workers with these skills, we hope to improve their employability and generally make them more attractive in the job market.”
