Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, has approved the appointment of the Paramount Ruler of Abi Local Government Area (LGA), His Royal Majesty, Oval (Elder) Solomon Osim Edward as the new chairman of the state’s Council of Chiefs.

A press release signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof Anthony Owan Enoh, and made available to newsmen in Calabar, the state’s capital, on Friday said the appointment is in exercise of powers vested in the governor by section 3 of the Council of Chiefs Law, Cap C15 Laws of Cross River State 2004

It said the appointment is for a tenure of two years and takes effect from June 21, 2024.

It could be recalled that Otu, on June 14, 2024, approved the immediate dissolution of the state Council of Chiefs after the state House of Assembly adopted a resolution calling on him to urgently terminate the appointment of His Royal Majesty, Barr Dr, Etinyin Okon Edet, who had overstayed his term of office as the council’s chairman and appoint another person from a different senatorial district.

Etinyin Dr Etim Okon Edet, who was appointed chairman of the state’s Council of Chief on September 9, 2011 by former Governor Liyel Imoke for a tenure of two years has served in that capacity for more than 12 years now.
