The Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has congratulated the state’s female football team, the Edo Queens, for qualifying for the semifinals of the CAF Champions League WAFU B Qualifier in Ivory Coast.

The team defeated Omnisport Etincelle 1-0 in their final Group B match on Saturday. Before the keenly contested match, the Nigerian champions already booked their place in the semifinal after winning their first two group matches.

They secured maximum points from three matches in the group, scoring eight goals and conceding none as they head into the next stage with a chip on their shoulders.

“I heartily congratulate our darling ladies, Edo Queens, for their outstanding performance in the CAF Champions League WAFU B Qualifier, securing a place in the semifinals of the competition after their 1-0 victory over Omnisport Etincelle of Burkina Faso, said Obaseki.

He added, “I celebrate your exploits and stellar performance throughout the group stage of the tournament, where you secured maximum points from all three matches, making our dear state and country proud. As the champions of the Nigerian Women’s Premier League (NWPL), you have once again demonstrated your prowess and exceptional talent on the continental stage, and we are confident that you will bring the laurel home.

“As you continue on your impressive run at the WAFU Zone B CAF Women’s Champions League qualifiers, be rest assured that the people and government of Edo State stand behind you. Accept my hearty congratulations.”

Meanwhile, the Chairperson of the NWFL, Nkechi Obi, also commended the team for their outstanding performance.

“On behalf of the NWFL board, I want to congratulate the Edo Queens on reaching the semifinals. I am proud of their performance so far,” Obi stated.

“They have shown true character and determination in this tournament. Their excellent run also justifies their domestic season title triumph. I am confident they will continue to make Nigeria and the NWFL proud as they progress further.”

The Nigerian Women’s Premier League champions will face the host nation’s Inter D’Abidjan in the semi-finals at Stade De La Paix in Bouake on Tuesday as they look to finish tops and represent the zone at this year’s CAF Women’s Champions League finals in November.
