D’Tigress forward Pallas Kunaiyi-Akpana is confident the Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team will build on their Paris 2024 Olympics success, The PUNCH reports.

Rena Wakama’s charges lost 88-74 to the USA in the quarterfinals of the Women’s Olympic Basketball Tournament on Wednesday, bringing an end to their record-breaking adventure in Paris.

While it was business as usual for the USA as they continued to bear down on another successful title defence, Nigeria bowed out of the competition as basketball heroes.

They made history in many ways and stepped off the court having been the first African team (men or women) to have even competed at this stage.

Despite being tagged underdogs, Nigeria were sensational at the tournament, attaining historical and unprecedented success and winning the hearts of basketball fans following their victories over Australia and Canada.

D’Tigress set themselves new standards at Paris 2024, including the last game against the Americans.

Nigeria scored more than 73 points in consecutive games for the first time at the Olympics, and their 26 points in the fourth quarter of Wednesday’s game are the most the USA has ever allowed in the last quarter of a game in the competition.

Reacting to their performance, Kunaiyi-Akpana, who made a huge difference for the team with her excellent rebounding ability and strong defensive potential, said she was proud of the team and believed they could build on their success.
