There was a pure display of athleticism and passion to excel beyond the classroom among pupils of Daniella’s Montessori School in Abule Egba, Lagos, as the school held their sixth biennial inter-house sports competition on Saturday.

The event featured 16 events for the pupils in the junior and senior categories and they kept their parents and guests on the edge of their seats, as they battled for supremacy on the medal table.

Some of the events that took centre stage during the event include; match past, 100m race, relay races, sack race, egg race and egg race. Parents weren’t just spectators too, taking to the tracks on two occasions to spice the event.

At the end of the competition, Red House came out tops with 19 medals (seven gold, seven silver and five bronze), despite getting the least points in the march past. They were followed in second place by Yellow House with a total of 16 medals (seven gold, two silver and seven bronze).

Green House narrowly sealed the third position with 13 medals (five gold, five silver and three bronze) ahead of Blue House with 12 medals (one gold, six silver and five bronze).

Proprietress of the school, Chinyere Ishoka, noted that the biennial event is key to the school’s ideology of building complete children.

“The school was founded in 2003 as a crèche and we began full operations in 2008. They say all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy so we just try to do all that will make us have total children. These days, children don’t do many things aside from using social media. So we try inculcating the spirit of sportsmanship in them,” she said.

One of the parents, Precious Umeh, also highlighted the potential of producing future champions in the school.

“It’s really fun because something like this doesn’t happen every year, so we just have to enjoy it. Danniella’s school remains one of the best schools around here and education and sports go together. Apart from exercising, it is now a career and this is where it begins,” she said.
