British-Nigerian artist Darkoo has made shocking allegations against Peter Okoye, one-half of the legendary music duo P-Square, accusing him of deliberately sabotaging her latest single, Focus On Me.
In a series of social media posts, Darkoo revealed that her music video for the song, which samples P-Square’s hit On Fire, was taken down for six days following actions allegedly initiated by Peter. The artist claims this move was not about copyright infringement but rather personal grievances.
“I wasn’t going to say anything, but my music video was taken down for six days by Peter of P-Square in an attempt to completely sabotage the song. Fortunately, the video is back up now,” Darkoo wrote.
According to her, the necessary legal clearances for the sample were secured, with P-Square receiving 50% royalties from the track. However, she alleges that Peter became hostile because he wanted to be featured on the song and even recorded a new verse for it.
“Peter told me not to speak to or clear the song with his brothers, Jude and Paul, claiming they would bring ‘unnecessary problems’ for me. Ironically, Jude and Paul have been incredibly helpful in resolving issues,” she added.
Darkoo accused Peter of acting out of anger and manipulating the situation after she didn’t include him in the initial release, though she had planned to feature him on the remix.
“Taking my video down wasn’t about copyright or contracts. It was because he didn’t get what he wanted. He told my team I ‘disrespected him.’ His actions hurt my fans and sabotaged all the time, money, and effort I put into this project,” she lamented.
The rising star also expressed heartbreak over the situation, as she grew up admiring P-Square. “To see someone I once looked up to actively try to hurt me and block my success is incredibly painful,” she said.
Darkoo maintains that she followed all the proper procedures and paid due respect to P-Square’s intellectual property. “This isn’t how our OGs are supposed to be moving. It’s sad and disappointing,” she concluded.
