Defection to APC Won’t Shield Politicians from Corruption Probes – FG

The Federal Government has declared that joining the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) will not protect political office holders from ongoing or future corruption investigations.

This was made known in a statement issued by the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, who reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to the rule of law and an uncompromising stance against corruption.

The statement was a response to recent allegations made by Paul Ibe, spokesperson to former Vice President and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar. Ibe had alleged that top officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Ministry of Justice held secret meetings with a former and a sitting governor from the South-South region shortly before their defection to the APC.

Fagbemi dismissed the claim as baseless and misleading, describing it as “from the pit of hell” and a “figment of imagination.” He stressed that neither the EFCC chairman nor the Solicitor General of the Federation met with any governors, past or present, as alleged.

“The public is urged to disregard such insinuations, which are nothing more than a feeble attempt to undermine the anti-corruption drive of this administration,” the AGF stated.

He further emphasized that President Tinubu’s administration remains steadfast in its anti-corruption agenda and will not be deterred by political affiliations or interests.

“No matter whose ox is gored, the rule of law and the fight against corruption will be upheld,” Fagbemi said.
