The Delta State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed support for the recent arrest of former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, seeing it as a positive move in Nigeria’s anti-corruption drive.
In a statement issued soon after the news surfaced, the APC emphasized that Okowa’s apprehension reflects the government’s commitment to addressing corruption and financial misconduct at both state and federal levels.
Naija News reports that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed the arrest of Okowa, Delta State’s former governor from 2015 to 2023, on allegations of fund misappropriation and dubious financial dealings and contracts during his tenure.
The APC’s statement, signed by State Publicity Secretary Valentine Onojeghuo Esq. and shared with reporters in Asaba, commended the Federal Government for its decisive action.
The party encouraged the EFCC to extend its scrutiny to other former governors and officials.
The APC noted that this arrest represents a broader national commitment to fighting corruption and ensuring that public resources benefit citizens instead of serving private interests.
The statement read, “We in the APC wholeheartedly welcome the news of the arrest of the former governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, who presided over one of the worst cases of financial recklessness and mismanagement on a monumental scale during his eight-year administration.
“His corrupt practices saw the diversion of humongous state funds for personal enrichment, establishing a bank, and financing his doomed presidential ambition, as well as the manipulative imposition of his puppet godson as governor against the wishes of the people of Delta State who desperately wanted change.
“No one, regardless of their position or political affiliation, is above the law.
“The fight against corruption must be unwavering and thorough, and we are glad to see the administration taking bold steps in this direction.”
