The Ovie of Idjerhe Kingdom in Ethiope West Local Government Area of Delta State, His Majesty on Monday Obukowho Whiskey Udurhie I, has called on Nigerians to take advantage of the rainy season to boost food security in the state and Nigeria at large.
He said the time is not for groaning over hunger, but rather to take advantage of the present rainy season and return to the farms to attain food security in the country.
The traditional ruler also urged the Federal Government to as a matter of top priority, holistically address the recurring farmers-herders clashes by guaranteeing the security of farmers on their farms.
The monarch said insecurity has to a large extent hindered farming activities in most communities across the country a situation which in effect has led to food shortage in the nation.
The king, who made the assertions while discussing critical national issues with journalists at his palace in Idjerhe Kingdom, maintained that Nigerians should not expect the government to bring food to their tables.
“Rather, all we need is government encouragement,” he stated.
“The government should boost the security architecture of the country and encourage people to go to their farms so that if you struggle to put up a farm, nobody should destroy your farm,” the king posited.
The Delta monarch further urged the Federal Government to decentralise its modalities of distributing fertilizers to farmers by ensuring that henceforth it is distributed along geo-political zone
“So that if a particular zone refuses to use their own to do farming, then at the next harvest season we can ask the question what did you do with yours?”
