The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Kemi Nandap, has warned Nigerians against getting involved in trans-border organised crimes.
Nandap spoke while addressing stakeholders during the continuation of her assessment tour of Nigerian borders in Katsina and Jigawa states.
Her address to border residents and stakeholders was disclosed to newsmen yesterday by the spokesman of the service, Kenneth Udo, a Deputy Comptroller of Immigration.
Udo said: “During the tour, she visited Fago Patrol Base, Daura Forward Operational Base and Kongolam Border Control Post as well as Magatari Control Post where she inspected the ongoing e-border projects and other facilities.
“In her address to the critical stakeholders at the border communities which included, traditional leaders, youth leaders, transport unions and market women, she solicited for their cooperation in safeguarding our borders, especially the vast unmanned areas.
“She equally enlightened them on the dangers of trans-border organised crimes such as smuggling of migrants and trafficking in persons with particular emphasis on the need to always provide useful information on the activities of irregular migrants.
“In the course of her interaction with other security agencies, she called for continued collaboration in the task of effective border governance, noting that, ‘A safe border is a safe nation.’
“Noteworthy is her courtesy visits to the former president, Muhammadu Buhari and the Emir of Daura, HRH, Alh. (Dr) Umar Farouk, at Daura.
“The CGI charged Border officers to display utmost professionalism in the discharge of their duties and to be extra vigilant in manning our borders. She further stressed that the Federal Government is committed to improving the working condition of officers at the borders through provision of logistics, accommodation and continuous capacity building.”
