Former US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, says the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, Kamala Harris, will “defend” the democracy and constitution of the United States.

Clinton, who was welcomed on the stage with applause from the cheering crowd that reportedly lasted for a minute uninterrupted, stated this during the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, on Tuesday.

“She will lower costs for hard-working families, open the doors wide for good paying jobs and she will restore abortion rights nationwide.

“She will defend democracy and our constitution and will protect America from enemies foreign and domestic,” Clinton said of Harris.

“There is a lot of energy in this room, just like there is across the country. Something is happening in America. You can feel it. Something we have worked for and dreamt of for a long time.

“On the other side of that glass ceiling is Kamala Harris raising her hand and taking the oath of office as our 47th president of the United States. Folks, my friends, when a barrier falls for one of us, it clears the way for all of us.

“This is when we stand up. This is when we break through. The future is here,” she said.

Clinton, a notable Democrat who lost to Donald Trump to become America’s first woman president in 2016, said he (Trump) was the “first person to run for president with 34 felony convictions,” as the crowd chanted, “Lock him up!”

Clinton’s mock at her former opponent was a ‘sort of clapback’ as she suffered the same fate in 2016 when Trump’s supporters routinely chanted, “Lock her up” at rallies about her as he vowed to put her in jail if he was elected, Sky News reports.

“We have him on the run now,” Clinton added.

The former First Lady praised US President Joe Biden for his patriotism, saying, “He brought dignity, decency and confidence back to the White House and showed what it means to be a true patriot.”

Earlier, a small group of about 100 demonstrators protesting against Israel’s war in Gaza briefly breached the outer security fence of the DNC, hours before Biden was set to pass the torch to Harris.

However, the police, wielding black batons, prevented them from getting to the inner cordon.
