The Federal Government has been urged to support private tertiary institutions to cushion the effect of the current economic hardship in the country.

The Vice-Chancellor of the Precious Cornerstone University, Timothy Adejumo, gave this advice at a press conference in commemoration of the third convocation ceremony of the institution, held in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Wednesday.

Adejumo said, “Private institutions are currently grappling with the economic situation as the income from student fees can no longer cover the operation costs.”

He appealed to the government to allow private institutions to benefit from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund and the Nigerian Education Loan Fund.

“Private universities are helping the government to train students that should ordinarily be roaming about. The government should not discriminate. Private universities need support. One of the things that is militating against the private institution is funding.” he stated.

Speaking on the forthcoming convocation, the VC disclosed that 118 students would be awarded degrees at the ceremony.

He expressed the commitment of the institution to train students with exceptional character and entrepreneurship processes.

Among those to be awarded are 14 First-Class, 65 Second-Class Upper, 37 Second-Class Lower, and 2 Third-Class honours.
