Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has launched a robust defence of Anthony Joshua in response to recent disparaging comments made by Tyson Fury.
The heavyweight champion Fury, who is preparing for a highly anticipated rematch with Oleksandr Usyk, referred to both Anthony Joshua and Daniel Dubois as “limited” fighters in the context of their performances against top competition.
Fury’s remarks specifically highlighted Joshua’s inability to defeat Usyk, suggesting that this failure indicated a lack of the necessary skills and prowess he had previously claimed to possess.
In stark contrast, Hearn came to Joshua’s defence by criticizing what he perceives as Fury’s arrogance, particularly in light of Fury’s surprising defeat to Usyk earlier in the year, which has led some to question his status and reliability in the ring.
Hearn strongly argues that Joshua should not be dismissed as a serious contender in the heavyweight division, reaffirming that boxing is inherently unpredictable and that any fighter, on the right night, has the potential to secure a victory against even the most established champions.
“There’s always this talk about fighters being ‘limited,’” Hearn remarked, highlighting the subjective nature of evaluating a fighter’s abilities.
“But we’ve seen what happens when the so-called best in the division get beaten. Fury himself has been knocked down and beaten by Usyk. So, to say Joshua can’t do it… it’s a bit rich.”
Hearn expressed confidence in Joshua’s capabilities, asserting that under the right circumstances, Joshua has the talent to defeat any opponent he faces – including Fury himself. “On any given night, AJ could defeat any opponent in the division,” he affirmed.
Currently, Anthony Joshua is in the process of bouncing back after suffering a fifth-round knockout loss to Dubois and is reportedly targeting a return to the ring in May or June.
The potential for a rematch against Dubois remains a possibility, but Hearn also hinted at the long-discussed dream fight between Joshua and Fury, noting that while it may not be in immediate focus, it is still a feasible option for the future.
“AJ is still looking for the big fights, and we’ll see where it goes,” Hearn stated. “But there’s no rush for Joshua; we’ll get him back in the ring and go from there.”
