Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has described as ‘unacceptable’ the new practice adopted by drivers in the country to use trailers and trucks to convey human beings and animals simultaneously.

Mohammed made this observation at a press briefing, yesterday, in Abuja to unveil the Corps’ strategies already in place to combat crashes on roads during this year’s Eid-el-Kabir special patrol, which began yesterday.

He said the ugly trend of using trailers and trucks to convey human beings, night trips, fatigue, speed violations, driving under influence, as well as overloading of vehicles had become major challenges confronting safe use of the highways, adding that the “Corps has stepped up to confront them on all fronts.

“This unacceptable act led to the flag-off of the Inter-Agency Joint Task Force to enforce compliance against use of trailers to convey passengers as well as mitigate road traffic crashes, fatalities and injuries emanating from the lawlessness of trailer drivers.

“The Joint Task Force (JTF) has successfully arrested a total of 222 trailers loaded with 3169 passengers hanging on top of goods and animals.

“As part of the operations, the JTF dropped over 2,440 passengers who were mandated to take alternative vehicles designed for conveying passengers.

He said the Corps had introduced some key safety initiatives to tackle the menace and combat the ugly trend, as well as meet up with the changing times, especially developments coming from the unsafe behaviours like the use of trailers to convey passengers.
